Never too late.
Loving comedy of all flavours for my first half-century, I waited until I was 50 for the penny to drop and realise I could just actually write something get up there and give stand-up comedy a go.
I had dabbled a little, at 18 joining the Royal Air Force, doing a sods opera on passing out night, a little show for all the instructors, friends and family, was my second time on stage. With my good mate Danny, we did a double act in which from my perspective the rehearsal was my best show of the day!
My first time on stage would be about age 8 for the schools nativity play, understudy for the lead narrator, I ended up playing a stormtrooper keeping guard in the stable. That traditional role in the biblical story. Not one of those stormtroopers you understand. We are talking early 1980s and Star Wars was at its height. Handmade mask if your asking - I grinned far too much all the way through the production that was normal for an evil henchman.
Between classes we formed an ad hoc little acting troop to play out the various scenes from our favourite movie. The little tyrant Samuel Taylor was not wrestling me out of Han Solo, jog on my friend.
I took a standard actor/comedians career break of 42 years and 12 stone - alright 15. Then I had a shocking revelation brought about by sitting right at the front of a Greg Davies gig. Stand-ups were people too and some of them start later! I came to an epiphany, stand-up is one of those few things you can actually just give it a go in front of an audience. Rock-Star-NO, Musician-NO (need to learn instruments etc), Tightrope walking - you get the idea. But stand-up comedy yes.
I wrote a 5 minute set over a period of 6 weeks, then in 2025, I got up on stage at The Attic, Southampton, UK on a Double-G promotions Open-Mic Night. Blinked at the bright lights and went for it.
Thanks the holy-father, Robin Williams, I didn’t die a death, people laughed, they even clapped at the end, and went on an adrenaline high for about 2 and a half days; the likes of which I hadn’t felt since I ‘guarding’ that little doll in the manger.
Then started the journey, the first 10 gigs, 25, 30 and now on the way to 50.
I have entered my various newcomer competitions:
Double-G Productions New Faces Joint Awardee 2026
The West End New Comedian of the Year (Old-35+ Category) 2025 Category Semi-Finalist
So You Think You Are Funny 2026 - Regional London Heats
Hampshire Comedian of the Year - Semi Finalist (Ongoing)
I have already ticked a couple of my comedy bucket list items off, with a major one this year, that to perform at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this year. I am performing a series of spots with the West End New Old Comedian of the Year Showcase between 27th and 30th August 2026 at the Doghouse Hotel as part of the Free Fringe. See my upcoming dates for times etc.
One incredible bonus of being on the circuit is the community or performer’s, promoter’s and venue owners - many putting on comedy in Cafe’s, Pubs, and Community Centres for free or for tickets as low as £5.
Please refer to upcoming dates to come and support me and the incredible local circuit’s of stand-up comedians. You may well be surprised at the quality, variety and commitment of the new breed of comedians and even spot some of the next generation of talent.
